For the Shitty Camera Challenge: Holiday Apocalypse I chose to shoot with my Major Award from the last Shitty Camera Challenge, which was a Sharper Image Instax Mini camera. This camera is a joy to shoot with. It is bulky and bright blue. People look at you funny when you are out shooting with it. Ok, people look at me funny regardless. I ordered a bunch of Fuji Instax film, both color and monochrome, and hit the streets.
Some turned out amazing. Some not so much. At some point, a piece of detritus got stuck on the roller that spits out the picture causing little dots to appear on the print, but they kind-of worked out in those pictures. The big mystery is the over-exposed rectangle in the middle of the palm tree photo. It’s the only one that happened to. I’ve asked a few people and no one seems to know how that could have happened, but I like it. I hope you enjoy looking at these as much as I had taking them.
But wait… There’s more!
I recently picked up a Holga 120GCFN. It came with a roll of Ilford HP5 Plus 400. I didn’t have any expectations from the first roll in the Holga. How accurate was the zone focusing and how accurate would I guess distances? Would the camera be plagued with light leaks? Would I even to remember to take the lens cap off for every shot? The answers are (in order): very, very, no, and yes.
While some of shots were just me taking a picture for the sake of learning what works best for the camera (and how offset the viewfinder is from the lens), some came out pretty good. I’m looking forward to throwing a roll of color film in this plastic wonder to take full advantage of its multicolor flash options.
